Kodiak Fun

This was really beautiful. It reminded me of an Andy Goldsworthy piece except this was all Nature. The ocean must have got cold enough to freeze and these panes of ice got stranded when the tide went out. They are balanced on the rocks here. I was walking down the stretch of them when I heard a tremendous "Crack!" behind me and turned to see Chris stomping on one. Then he stomped on another, and another. I was momentarily horrified but then realized that I had better join in or they would all be gone. And anyway, it was just ice. It would melt soon. We started tossing them. I figured I had appreciated the beauty of Nature and then interacted with it. Surely no one else would be out to see it anyway, it was so feakin' cold. Then I saw some people had come with their dog away far up the beach. Ahh, they probably wouldn't walk all the away out here anyway... Posted by Picasa

This was a sea anemone. I think it must have gotten exposed when the tide went out and then froze and then maybe its cells burst and then - it expired in a puddle of pink felshy stuff. Gross. Posted by Picasa

I thought this was really cool looking. I think the ice froze into icicles on these rocks at the tide line. And it was really, really freakin' cold. With wind! On a wide open beach. I wasn't being a wuss. (yes you were.) Posted by Picasa

This is White Sands beach, though the white appearance is snow this time of year. Its located at the end of the road leading North-ish. Today is very, very cold and windy. Karina wasn't dealing with the cold well, and was ready to leave after barely getting out of the car. Posted by Picasa

The benefits of living in AK. Yum, King crab by the 10 lb box. One of Chris' co-workers said back when she first came here 25 years ago crab was so abundant it was brought to every party. She got so sick of it she wont' eat crab to this day. When she told us this, I couldn't imagine that would be possible. I LOVE crab. However, I am now sick of King Salmon and have started to wonder about getting sick of the things you love. Crab is not so cheap these days and we don't have an "in" so I don't think I need to worry. It's still a special meal when we break into one of those giant legs. One a piece just about fills us up! Posted by Picasa

eeeeeee, it's . . . . .what's his name. Posted by Picasa

After dinner it was up to Karina and I to come up with some fun games. We started with Dictionary, where someone picks an impossible word from the dictionary and everyone else comes up with creative definitions to trick each other. Then we played Celebrity, where everyone puts in a bunch of famous peoples names and each person teams up with another player and tries to get him or her to say the name. A bit tougher if you're not from the USA and someone puts in Manolo Blanik. Posted by Picasa

It was also the hostess Susan's birthday in a couple days. Posted by Picasa

Here are some Thanksgiving classics - green bean casserole with those little fried onions on top and some yams with tons of marshmallows. There was also some great homemade "Irish stuffing" - the hostess' mother's recipe - and Chris made some excellent Mama Yee's Traditional Thanksgiving Clam Chowder. Of course in fine Yee style it had a pound of bacon in it. Mmmm fat. Posted by Picasa

Ooooo...just 10 or 20 minutes more before Thanksgiving dinner. Posted by Picasa

Friends from the Fish Tech center invited us for Thanksgiving. International group... Brazil, China, India, Thailand, Morocco, Klamath Falls, Seattle. Posted by Picasa

We only caught one fish on this trip. Karina gets the next one. This fish was super tasty. Cooked it up like the Chinese style whole steamed fish, except it was only a fillet. Steamed with ginger, green onions, soy sauce, a bit of lemon then added cilantro and drizzled hot sesame oil on top. I'll spare you the pictures of it cooked. Posted by Picasa

I can't get enough of this cutie! Posted by Picasa

Went out for a short fishing expedition Sunday morning on Mark's fishing boat. Made it out to the fishing spot just as the sun was rising. Posted by Picasa

I know your getting sick of seeing our fish dinners. I only put this in for the tasty iron skillet corn bread that Karina made with plenty of honey butter on the side. (just in case your interested, we ate the salmon with a homemade BBQ sauce... not bad.) Posted by Picasa

The fried bit helped, but its impossible to make liver not feel and taste like liver. It also helped that it was fresh. Fresh meat seems to have abit more bounce in it. Somehow the chi's still around. (notice that karina made me a egg on the side since she new i wouldn't eat much of the liver.) Posted by Picasa

Karina got some fresh deer liver from a co-worker at the dentist's office. She cut it thin, floured, and fried it. I like just about anything fried, but then again, i like just about anything... except liver. Posted by Picasa

Here's the artist with her artwork. Posted by Picasa

Now that's a fine looking sign that Karina made. It ended up costing a bit more than we expected for the materials, $100!!!, but i think just about everyone in Kodiak ended up seeing it. That's the benefit of living in a one road town. (Karina corrected me since we actually have more than one road in Kodiak, but i told her its just an expression.) Posted by Picasa

I swear, we do more in kodiak than eat and fish, not that that's a bad life. We made some tasty bacon, cheddar biscuits from the Bacon Recipe book I gave one of my ex-vegetarian friends, Sarah. Now that's a baked good i could eat all day. Posted by Picasa

They say you can use halibut in place of chicken for any recipe. Karina tried it in her father's enchilada pie recipe. YUM!!! Posted by Picasa
